Pattern Book Factory

The real identity of this factory is not known but the name "Pattern Book Factory" was coined by Michael Berthoud (2002) after he found a book in the Victoria and Albert Museum Print room in 1976. This was entitled: "No 4 Painters Pattern Book Begins No 323 Ends June 7 1809". The painted and numbered patterns in this book have allowed cups and other teawares to be attributed to this factory. Bute cups with simple loop handles were made and patterns have "Bute" written after the number. Other patterns have "Worc Shape" or "W Shape" after the number and this refers to a Worcester shaped cup with stepped sides and a ring handle with thumb rest. Other patterns have "French shape" after them but what this means is not clear. Could it be the bucket shaped cup with French shaped handle (see below)?
